Terry Brooks Allen is not a novice when it comes to the importance of having order in his life, being most considerate of others and the role personal image plays in our daily lives. Terry’s path to teaching socially acceptable behavior began in his childhood. He recalls a time when his maternal grandmother was president of the Susie Scales Floral Club. As president, his grandmother would host meetings in her home where the ladies would show up in their Sunday’s best. White gloves and all. This group of ladies would have a business meeting and enjoy light refreshments afterwards. From the sparkling formal china, to the salad that was served on a bed of fresh greens, to the cherry that garnished the half pear topped with cottage cheese. Everything was well done. Terry’s grandmother knew that presentation sent the ultimate message of your presence is appreciated and welcomed here.
Today, Terry’s message is the same. Not only does he teach the importance of presentation, he also educates professionals on how to conduct themselves in the presence of such formality. Since the late 1980’s, Terry has been teaching dining etiquette. While serving as Vice President of a National Student Organization, he found himself in a very awkward situation, having used the wrong bread plate at a formal breakfast. Although the other diner gave graciousness in pointing out his faux pas, that single moment sparked a self-study of proper etiquette that Terry has continued to pursue and share with the community.
Earning a BS degree in Family and Consumer Science (aka Home Economics) has given Terry the foundation needed to speak on socially acceptable behavior and wardrobe planning. His knowledge of etiquette has evolved over the years to include: Networking and Cocktail Etiquette, Millennials and NETiquette, Corporate and Cross Cultural Etiquette. Each presentation focuses on moving professionals out of self-defeating behaviors into career enhancing and self-empowering choices that support individuals in becoming outstanding ambassadors for their employers. Known for his meticulous self-presentation, Terry brings creativity and sensitivity to the etiquette industry. From his extensive experience in the men's apparel industry, where he presented and sold high-end Italian clothing and traditional made-to-measure clothing for Raleigh Ltd and the Tom James Co. Terry knows how to dress people for success as many of his clients came from the top 10% of income earners for his demographic community. With a concentration in Clothing & Textiles, Terry knows fabrics and fashion. Terry serves retained clients, dressing corporate executives, entrepreneurs, professional athletes, attorneys and physicians.
One of Terry’s favorite quotes is by Lord Chesterfield, “You cannot image how necessary it is to mind all these little things…for I have seen many people with great talent ill received”.
Terry focuses on intentionally creating the life he wants to live. From relationships to career interests to his creative ideas and dreams. Owning his self-empowerment has transformed Terry’s way of thinking and living. Stepping away from formal employment into entrepreneurship has been the single most empowering move he has made. Instead of allowing life to happen to him haphazardly, Terry is actively involved in the unfolding of his uniqueness every single day.
